In this 1959 photo, NBA legend Bob Pettit teaches basketball skills at FCA’s National Convention at Estes Park, Colo.
Over the years, Pettit was a part of several FCA Camps. In fact, former FCA President John Erickson came into a personal relationship with Christ after hearing Pettit and others speak at an FCA Camp in Lake Geneva, Wis., in 1960. Erickson, then the head men’s basketball coach at Wisconsin, was at the camp after loaning some of his equipment for the week. After hearing Pettit and others speak at the camp, Erickson gave his life to Christ when he returned home. Twelve years later, Erickson was named FCA’s National President.
For his part, Pettit did pretty well, too. The former LSU star won a pair of NBA Most Valuable Player honors, and helped the St. Louis Hawks win a title in 1958. The 11-time All-Star was named one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players in 1996.
