Lessons from “Boo”

Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Dave “Boo” Ferriss has been a part of FCA from the very beginning. In this photo, Boo is showing student-athletes at the 1961 FCA Camp in Lake Geneva, Wis., “how to hold the ball so that it will ‘hop’ a little,” as a caption of the photo read in the Sept., 1961 issue of The Christian Athlete.

Following his pitching career, Ferriss went on to become the head baseball coach at Delta State University in his home state of Mississippi. He is a member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, the Delta State University Sports Hall of Fame, the Mississippi State University Sports Hall of Fame and the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Since 2004, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame has presented the Ferriss Trophy to the Mississippi Collegiate Player of the Year.

In addition Mississippi FCA annually awards the Dave “Boo” Ferriss Influence Award.
