“Deacon” Dan Towler, a running back with the Los Angeles Rams from 1950-55, was a part of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes from its inception until his death in 2001. Towler was a four-time Pro Bowl performer from 1951-54 and led the Rams to the NFL Championship in 1951. He coached at FCA Conferences and Camps for years and also spent much of his time speaking and teaching about Christianity and athletics on behalf of FCA. He was elected to FCA’s Hall of Champions in 1999.

Following his football career, Towler went into ministry full-time, and was also a long-time president of the Los Angeles County Board of Education.
His obituary in the Los Angeles Times tell of how he studied for the ministry while he was playing for the Rams.
